Results of 2023 Economic Research Competition for Students and PhD Fellows

The Bank of Russia and the Russian Journal of Money and Finance (RJMF) announced the results of 2023 Economic Research Competition for Students and PhD Fellows.

Ten papers out of 66 submitted for the Competition form the shortlist.

2023 Prize Winners

First Prize: Daniil Lomonosov (RANEPA) for his paper ‘Business Activity Shock and Specific Shock of Oil Market in DSGE Model of Russian Economy: Their Impact Under Different Monetary Policy Regimes’

Second Prize: Ivan Belousov (Faculty of Economics, MSU) for his paper ‘Econometric Estimation of the Monetary Policy Transmission Channels Using Microdata from Russian Companies’

Third Prize: Gleb Lysenko (MSU, Faculty of Economics) for his paper ‘Decomposition of Consumer Inflation into Demand and Supply Effects in the Context of Commodity Groups and Regions of Russia’

The Competition jury have decided to award Ivan Golyukov (Far Eastern Federal University, author of a paper ‘Impact of Access to Mobile Internet on Digital Financial Inclusion’) a special diploma – ‘For Analysis of Financial Inclusion Factors’ – from the Bank of Russia and the RJMF.

Daniil Lomonosov, the winner of the Competition, will be invited to give a paper at the Bank of Russia, New Economic School, and the Base Faculty of the Bank of Russia at HSE University Research Workshop ‘Russian Economy and Financial Sector Under Structural Transformation’ held in Saint-Petersburg on 5 July 2023. Other winners – Ivan Belousov, Gleb Lysenko, and Ivan Golyukov – will be invited to participate in the Workshop.

All the Competition winners will also have an opportunity to join the Bank of Russia Summer Macroeconomic School and the Financial Congress of the Bank of Russia held in Saint-Petersburg on 4 July and 6–7 July 2023, respectively.

The jury has noted the high quality of other papers from the shortlist:

  • Aleksey Kipriyanov (International College of Economics and Finance, HSE University) with a paper ‘Regulator’s Dilemma: Short Selling Ban vs Capital Requirements Under Basel III’;

  • Vladislav Gusev (International College of Economics and Finance, HSE University) with a paper ‘Asset-Market Effects of Monetary Policy in Russia’;

  • Meylis Orazov (International College of Economics and Finance, HSE University) with a paper ‘The Interaction of Monetary and Macroprudential Policies in the Presence of Financial Frictions’;

  • Sofya Kolesnik (Faculty of Economics, MSU) with a paper ‘Modelling of the Consequences of Unconventional Monetary Policy Measures Implemented in the European Monetary Union’;

  • Kirill Anikeev (HSE University) with a paper ‘The Heterogeneous Banking System Under a Negative Interest Rate Policy’;

  • Maria Besedovskaya (Faculty of Economics, MSU) with a paper ‘Forecasting Inflation in Russia Using Phillips Curve’.

The winners’ papers and those from the shortlist, with the approval of the authors, will be considered for publication in the RJMF after necessary revision to address the format of a research paper.
