Results of 2024 Economic Research Competition for Students and PhD Fellows
The Bank of Russia and the Russian Journal of Money and Finance announced the results of 2024 Economic Research Competition for Students and PhD Fellows.
Twelve papers out of 65 submitted for the Competition form the shortlist.
After evaluating the papers, a jury of independent experts – the Russian Journal of Money and Finance co-editors and the Bank of Russia researchers – chose four winners; the Third Prize went to two competitors.
2024 Prize Winners
First Prize: Kirill Kovyrshin (Saint-Petersburg School of Economics and Management, HSE University) for his paper ‘Financial Networks in Metrics of Contagion: The Role of Interbank Panic’
Second Prize: Stepan Novikov (New Economic School) for his paper ‘Bank Market Power and Transmission of Monetary Policy’
Third Prize: Elizaveta Volgina (Lomonosov Moscow State University) for her paper ‘Forecasting Inflation Using News Indices’; Daniil Spiridonov (New Economic School) for his paper " The Heterogeneous Effect of Monetary Policy on Business Activity in Russian Regions’
The jury noted the high quality of other papers from the shortlist:
• Anna Pustovalova (Lomonosov Moscow State University) with a paper ‘Econometric Estimation of the Monetary Policy Effect on the Debt Burden at the Industry Level in Russia’;
• Anastasia Matevosova (Lomonosov Moscow State University) with a paper ‘Modeling the Role of Trust in the Central Bank Using Sentiment Analysis’;
• Alexandra Chudaeva (Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration) with a paper ‘Analysis of Inflation Risk Factors in Russia’;
• Varvara Furik (HSE University) with a paper ‘Predicting Stock Returns of Russian Oil Companies Using News Text Analysis’;
• Dmitry Fedorov (Lomonosov Moscow State University) with a paper ‘Estimating and Forecasting Yield Curves of the Russian Money Market’;
• Galina Tregubova (Lomonosov Moscow State University) with a paper ‘The Impact of Supply and Demand Shocks in China on Monetary Policy in Russia’;
• Polina Fober (New Economic School) with a paper ‘The Impact of Bank Default on the Structure of Interaction of Participants in the Banking System’;
• Anastasia Semkina (HSE University) with a paper ‘The Heterogeneous Impact of Inflation on the Financial State of Russian Households’.
Kirill Kovyrshin, the winner of the Competition, is invited to give a paper at the Bank of Russia, New Economic School, and Bank of Russia’s Department at the HSE University Research Workshop ‘Competition in the Financial Sector: Barriers, Challenges and Paths of Further Development’ held in Saint-Petersburg on 2 July 2024. All the Competition winners and finalists are also invited to participate in the Workshop. They also have an opportunity to join the Bank of Russia Summer Macroeconomic School and the Financial Congress of the Bank of Russia held in Saint-Petersburg on 1 July and 3–5 July 2024, respectively. Travel and accommodation costs for the 2nd and 3rd winners will be covered by the hosts.
The winners’ papers and those from the shortlist, with the approval of the authors, will be considered for publication in the RJMF after necessary revision to address the format of a research paper.
